A mother’s love is like our own breath. Harmoniously, continually, and quietly doing its part. While we do acknowledge it’s presence it’s only when we begin to live consciously that its true essence fills our soul. What is your mother’s legacy? How do you honour it?
This gorgeous woman in the photo has been my rock and anchor through out my life. I have the privilege of calling her my Biji (mom). When I reflect on her life and mine I am reminded of one of my favourite quotes by Maya Angelou, “I come as one but I stand as ten thousand.”
“I come as one but I stand as ten thousand.”
Who I am and what my legacy maybe is inseparable from who my mother is and the legacy she brings with her of those before her.
My mother’s life has not been easy by any means. Married to the oldest of eight children and living in a joint family for years, loosing her own mother at 20, and having to nurture two teenage siblings and emotionally supporting her father she learnt early to take life by the horns and live it.
Her heroism lies not in epic, momentous achievements but in the strength, resilience, patience, and enthusiasm with which she has conducted herself and continues to do so at the gracious age of 85.
While most of us struggle to find our purpose I am convinced she was born knowing that hers was to serve others. She doesn’t speak English nor does she drive. While my father has onset of dementia she is his unwavering care-taker.
Biji’s world is small, her needs are few, her purpose is strong and her life is abundant. She has always been unapologetically herself, never trying to please or fit in. She holds tight those she loves dearly and never thinks twice when they need her.
She wakes up everyday to see how she can make life easier for those around her. That she says is her DHARMA.
How do I pay my gratitude to this amazing woman to whom I owe so much? By making sure she is supported, loved and cared for in her vulnerable years and by carrying forward her beautiful legacy.
All the while she continues to be my solid ROCK.
How does your mother’s legacy impact who you are? How do you come as ten thousand.
Happy Mother’s Day week to all the amazing moms.
With love,
Devinder 💖
