“Fashion is like eating. You shoudn’t stick with the same menu.”— Kenzo Takada
I absolutely love this quote about fashion. I find one of the easiest and most fun ways to bring joy and excitement into every day life is through our attire. When I was a little girl, I loved to play dress up and that love affair with fashion continues. In fact, I think it has intensified with age.
“Playing dress-up begins at age five and never truly ends.” —Kate Spade
I love the opportunity to wear different styles of outfits. But even more so, my most favorite part is having the options to wear every color under the rainbow. Yes, when it comes to color I hate discriminating in every sense of the word. Colors make things fun, exciting and different. Can you imagine if the whole world was just one color?
So when the fashion world says no whites after labour day I feel restrained and cheated. You can imagine my excitement when watching the Oscars this year I noticed so many white dresses in many different styles. I was inspired to pull out some whites from my own closet.
It started with my white fitted trousers from H & M, paired with one of my favorite pastel tops from Aritzia. This woolen white coat, custom made in India, not only provided the much needed warmth but added the white on white layering on top.
I chose to go with these nude, Michael Kors, shoes in the closed toe and block heel to keep it all subtle and be comfortable at the same time.
To finish the look I chose to carry this timeless, Louise Vuitton, from my closet. And these Dolce Gabana sunglasses I invested in a few years back, have become my favorite go to for glasses.
When it comes to accessories with my western outfits I am a minimalist. (When I dress in the traditional Indian it’s a whole different story). A dainty necklace and some well made pair of ear-rings always add the beautiful intricate detail.
I find, to transition this look into the evening, one could simply replace the bag with a clutch and viola!!
This touch of pastel in the outfit is also perfect for this later part of the winter when we are so excited for the spring yet the cold just won’t leave.
You may have noticed quite a range in the brands in this outfit. You see the same way I never want to discriminate with color I also don’t want to discriminate with brands. I don’t let brands define me. I am just as comfortable wearing a $50 pair of pants from H & M as I am wearing a $200 pair of pants from Ann Taylor. What is most important is that the pieces fit into my style and makes me feel comfortable and confident.
Having said that I do love to invest in certain well- made timeless articles for my closet. This Louise Vuitton purse is one of those pieces. It goes back some 16 years when my husband and I started a new business. On this particular occasion when we exceeded our goal for the month he took me shopping downtown and I chose this gorgeous bag. My first and only Louise Vuitton and yes, best husband ever.
Since then it has travelled around the world with me and I visualize my grand-daughters carrying it with pride (I am bit of an emotional fool and I wouldn’t change it for the world.
I do love wearing white year around. But the key to remember is that the fabrics have to be seasonally appropriate. Going with heavier, warmer fabrics in the winter instead of the cottons or eye-lets will certainly make the white work for the winter.
The whites, in my opinion are classy, elegant and forever fresh. Sometimes we shy away from whites as they have a tendency to get dirt. But go ahead and dare to bring on that confidence within you. m
