In life, it’s not where you go, it’s who you travel with – Charles M. Schultz”
This past November marked 35 incredible years of a beautiful journey of friendship, love, and commitment. A bond that has grown and flourished with each passing year. Our milestone marriage anniversary called for an exceptional and memorable celebration.
I remember years ago when our children were young, Ravi wanted us to go to the Maldives. I looked up this tiny country, in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Made up of 26 atolls and nearly 1200 small islands, with the highest point being merely 2 meters (6.5’) above sea level, it scared me. What if it all sunk into the ocean while we were there? What would our kids do?
Now so many years later these islands still intact, our children much older and me becoming more of a risk taker, it seemed to be an incredible way to celebrate. It would be a perfect location for the two of us to appreciate and cherish our beautiful togetherness. Furthermore, it would also give each of us the opportunity to focus and connect with our own selves.
Ever since he planned our 25th anniversary so immaculately (which I will share at a later date) Ravi has taken charge of planning all our trips. I must say he does an amazing job. This trip actually worked out into two great vacations as we planned a stop-over in Kochi, India as well.
Lately, with all our travel plans, our first question always is what is our intent? Of course, with the Maldives, our intent was celebration and indulgence. Thirty-five years calls for splurging and spoiling ourselves with luxury and that is exactly what we did. After extensive research and planning, our destination was the exclusive Taj Exotica Resort situated on a gorgeous private island. (Like all other resorts here).
From Mali, we were transported directly by a boat to this island. “A piece of paradise”, is the only way to explain this romantic island with an exceptional location, layout, and service. While Strolling barefoot on the beautiful beaches, I have never felt sand so soft and relaxing. And looking into the deep ocean I have never seen water so clear, and beautiful. We could step down from our patio into the 4’ deep gorgeous coral and swim with the fish or just sit on the edge and watch these beautiful, playful creatures.
With each sunrise, came the opportunity to walk barefoot to the yoga pavilion and meditate overlooking the vast ocean. Similarly, couples massage at The Java Spa, where the warm breeze and the aroma of the Ayurvedic oils combined so beautifully, made us feel so relaxed and alive.
Whether we had Maldivian food at the “24-Degrees” restaurant; exquisite fine-dine experience at the Deep-End restaurant, perched atop waters with partial al-fresco seating and live music; or the most romantic private dinner at the Bridal Pavilion with candles and flowers, the food was absolutely delectable and the ambiance was unforgettable.
My most beautiful memory was the day of our actual anniversary. Right before the private dinner, Ravi got down on one knee and asked if I would spend another 35 years with him. I have never felt so humbled, loved and grateful. I must have done something right to deserve this man.
We could have nourished our souls all five days just indulging in these activities. However, we promised ourselves, to push beyond our comfort and try something new with each travel experience. We chose snorkeling in the deep ocean and parasailing 250 meters above it. Both these activities expanded our existence beyond imagination. Experiencing the flawless universe under the ocean and absorbing its magnificence from above gave me a renewed sense of gratitude. Whenever my problems seem overwhelming, I must remember the smallness of my existence in this phenomenal universe! I shall always be grateful for being able to experience this journey and carry on.
As, Anita Desai, said – “Wherever you go becomes a part of you somehow”.
